Spring on the Lehigh Gorge Trail

What: Join us on Friday, May 21, as we ride through the beautiful Lehigh River Gorge, a popular 3 – 5 hour downhill biking day trip on the Lehigh Gorge section of the D&L Biking Trail. You’ll ride along the slight downhill grade (2%) of an abandoned railroad bed and follow the river all the way through Lehigh Gorge State Park on the D&L Trail.

As we pedal, we will see fantastic rock formations, tumbling waterfalls and abundant wildlife. We'll picnic at one of the little picnic stops along the trail. We can also explore the ruined locks of the former Lehigh Canal or marvel at the Penn Haven Planes – a relic from the early railroad era.  View the trail map.

Where: The trip starts in Jim Thorpe, Pa., at Pocono Biking, where we will take a 10 a.m. shuttle with our bikes to White Haven to begin the 25-mile ride back to Jim Thorpe. We can meet at the Weis parking lot on Upper Front Street in Binghamton and caravan/car pool from there. Car-pool arrangements are on your own. The drive to Jim Thorpe is about 110 miles and takes about  1 hour and 45 minutes. We need to be at Pocono Biking no later than 9:30 a.m. to board the shuttle by 9:50 a.m.

Cost: The shuttle costs $25. I have shuttle reservations for 12. Payment by check must be made to TCSC and mailed to Ingrid Jordak, 244 Greenwood Road, Lisle, NY.  Deadline for payment is May 9.

Bike rentals are available for an additional fee and must be done on your own. See Pocono Biking. For more information and directions to their location in Jim Thorpe.

What to Bring: Bring a picnic lunch, water and snacks. You can purchase food in Jim Thorpe or White Haven to take on the trail. This is a self-guided trail in a remote area. There are no stores, phones, etc. available while on the trail.  Wear/bring: Helmet, synthetic clothes, Lycra shorts, sneakers, hat, sunscreen, backpack, water, sunglasses, bug spray.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made more than 10 days prior to a trip may be rescheduled or refunded. If you cancel within 10 days of your trip, you may reschedule or receive passes, which are good until the end of 2023.

For more information, contact trip leader Ingrid Jordak at jordaki2002@yahoo.com or text to 607-221-4606.

Note: If the trip is full, you may also try to make your own reservation for the shuttle by contacting Pocono Biking on your own. Many people ride the trail without taking the shuttle. If you wish to ride on your own, there is no need to register. Registration is only for those who wish to take the shuttle from Jim Thorpe to White Haven and then ride their bike back to Jim Thorpe.
